History

Established as a trading enterprise in the 1930s, Al-Futtaim expanded rapidly during the 1940s and 1950s, evolving into an integrated commercial, industrial, and services organisation.

In 2000, the Al-Futtaim family amicably divided business interests, with Abdulla Al Futtaim leading the automotive and retail-focused Al-Futtaim Group, while his cousin Majid Al Futtaim established what is now known as Majid Al Futtaim Group. The settlement was mediated by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Over the years, the Group has continued to expand organically and through strategic acquisitions. In 2013, it bid USD 86 million to acquire full control of CMC Holdings in Kenya. In 2022, Al-Futtaim was ranked third in Forbes Middle East’s Top 100 Arab Family Businesses, reflecting its scale, resilience, and regional influence.
