A powerful cold spell continues to grip the country, with feels-like temperatures plunging to around –8°C in the Al-Salmi region today, according to meteorological observations. In response, the Meteorological Department has reiterated its warnings, urging caution over the risk of frost, especially in open desert areas and agricultural zones.
Alongside the extreme cold, weather officials have warned of unstable atmospheric conditions expected to persist over the next several days. Forecasts indicate intermittent rainfall of varying intensity from today through next Sunday, with weather patterns shifting almost daily.
Light, scattered showers are expected on Thursday, while Friday is likely to see a noticeable increase in rainfall, potentially affecting several areas. Meteorologists have also highlighted the chance of thunderstorm activity, particularly during Saturday evening and throughout Sunday.
Acting Director of the Meteorological Department, Darrar Al-Ali, stated that current weather charts and advanced numerical models show the country coming under the influence of a deepening surface low-pressure system, aligned with an exceptionally cold upper-level air mass. This interaction is expected to generate dense low- and mid-level cloud cover, along with rain-producing thunderclouds.
He added that weather conditions are expected to begin stabilizing from Sunday afternoon, as rainfall gradually weakens and winds shift to southeasterly directions. Wind speeds during this phase are forecast to range between 12 and 38 km/h, occasionally strengthening on Saturday to 15–50 km/h, which may cause rough sea conditions with waves exceeding six feet.
From early Sunday morning, however, another phase of atmospheric disturbance is anticipated. Winds are expected to turn northwesterly, becoming moderate to strong at times, with speeds reaching 25–65 km/h. These conditions could trigger dust-laden winds and reduced horizontal visibility in several areas.
Temperature readings during this period are forecast to remain low, with daytime highs ranging between 15°C and 21°C, while nighttime temperatures are expected to drop to between 5°C and 11°C.
