Our History – The Journey of Mediclinic
Foundation & Early Development (1983–1994) The story of Mediclinic began when Dr Edwin Hertzog, our current Chairman, was commissioned by the then Rembrandt Group (now Remgro Group) to conduct a feasibility study into private hospitals in South Africa. This visionary study led to the founding of Mediclinic.
Shortly thereafter, Mediclinic was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, marking the beginning of a new era in private healthcare delivery. Mediclinic Middle East operates a number of multidisciplinary hospitals and clinics, all with stateof-the-art equipment and facilities.Even though Mediclinic operates in a very structured clinical environment, the company makes time to focus on the overall wellness, both physical and mental, of all Mediclinic employees.Mediclinic takes ownership for outcomes and continuously improves and innovates company processes. Key milestones during this formative period included:
- Commissioning of Mediclinic Panorama in Parow — the first hospital built by Mediclinic
- Establishment of Medical Innovations to design and manufacture medical equipment locally
- Opening of Mediclinic Constantiaberg (Constantia), Mediclinic Stellenbosch, and Mediclinic Hoogland (Bethlehem)
- Acquisition of facilities including Mediclinic Sandton, Mediclinic Morningside, and Leeuwendal (later Mediclinic Cape Town)

The Group entered a transformative global growth phase:
- Introduction of a R1.1 billion black ownership initiative through Phodiso Holdings and MP1 Investment Holdings

- Mediclinic Middle East
In 2006–2007, Mediclinic acquired a controlling interest in Mediclinic Middle East (then Emirates Healthcare) in Dubai and a 100% interest in Hirslanden, Switzerland’s leading private hospital group operating 13 facilities.
In 2012, Mediclinic completed the acquisition of the minority interest in Mediclinic Middle East, increasing its shareholding to 100% and rebranding operations from Emirates Healthcare to Mediclinic.

A landmark milestone occurred in 2016 with the combination of Mediclinic International Limited and Al Noor Hospitals Group through a reverse takeover. This resulted in the enlarged company maintaining its listing on the London Stock Exchange, with secondary listings in Johannesburg and Namibia.
Further international diversification followed with the acquisition of a 29.9% stake in Spire Healthcare plc, a leading UK-based private healthcare provider.
