Almarai is a Saudi multinational food and beverage company headquartered in Riyadh. Listed on the Tadawul, it is one of the largest integrated dairy producers in the Middle East, specializing in dairy, juice, bakery, poultry, and infant nutrition products.

History : Early Years (1977–2010) : Almarai was founded in 1977 by Irish brothers Alastair McGuckian and Paddy McGuckian, in partnership with Prince Sultan bin Mohammed bin Saud Al Kabeer. At a time when Saudi Arabia had limited dairy infrastructure, the founders invested in modern farming and logistics systems to improve milk production and distribution across the Kingdom.

During the 1990s, Almarai underwent major restructuring, shifting from decentralized operations to a centralized production model. Smaller dairy farms and processing plants were consolidated into large-scale facilities in Al Kharj.

In 2005, the company transitioned into a joint-stock company and launched its IPO, listing 30% of its shares on Tadawul in 2006. Savola Group remains a significant shareholder.

Expansion & Diversification

From 2006 onward, Almarai diversified beyond fresh milk into cheese, juices, bakery products, and poultry.

In 2009, Almarai formed a joint venture with PepsiCo called International Dairy & Juice Limited (IDJ). Through this venture, it acquired Egypt’s Beyti and later expanded into Jordan by acquiring a majority stake in Teeba.

The company also entered the poultry sector through the acquisition of Hail Agricultural Development Co.

By 2014, Almarai controlled approximately 44% of the dairy market in the Persian Gulf region. Between 2006 and 2016, its workforce expanded to nearly 38,000 employees.

The company further expanded internationally by acquiring farmland in California, United States, and investing in Argentina’s agricultural sector through Fondomonte.

In 2017, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, Public Investment Fund, increased its stake in Almarai to over 16%, valuing the investment at approximately $2.4 billion.

Between 2019 and 2023, Almarai focused heavily on production optimization, logistics, and regional expansion.

Facilities & Sustainability

Almarai’s flagship production complex is located in Al Kharj, approximately 60 miles from Riyadh. The facility includes:

Dairy and juice processing plants
Bakery production facilities
The region’s first infant nutrition factory
Advanced logistics and warehousing infrastructure

In 2017, the company launched CPP3, a major expansion of its Al Kharj complex.

Operating in one of the driest climates in the world, Almarai uses advanced temperature control systems and efficient water management practices inspired by large-scale dairy production models. Its products are distributed to more than 55,000 retail outlets across the Gulf region.
