AD Ports Group (Arabic: مجموعة موانئ أبوظبي), formerly known as Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC), is the exclusive developer and regulator of ports and related infrastructure in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Established by Emiri Decree in 2006, the Group has evolved into an integrated trade, logistics, and industrial enabler supporting economic diversification in the UAE and internationally. AD Ports Group is majority owned by Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company (ADQ), one of the region’s largest holding companies. The Group was publicly listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) on 8 February 2022 under the ticker symbol ADPORTS.

History and Evolution : Founded in 2006 as Abu Dhabi Ports Company, the organization was mandated to develop and oversee the emirate’s ports infrastructure.In 2021, AD Ports Group was formally established, consolidating its subsidiaries into a unified structure operating across five integrated business clusters:

This restructuring strengthened the Group’s position as a fully integrated trade and logistics platform serving regional and global markets.Business Clusters and Operations : Digital The Digital Cluster includes Maqta Gateway, which developed and operates the Advanced Trade and Logistics Platform (ATLP) under the supervision of Abu Dhabi’s Department of Economic Development. The ATLP unifies trade and logistics services across sea, land, and air channels, as well as industrial zones and free zones within Abu Dhabi.

Economic Cities & Free Zones This cluster oversees KEZAD Group, the region’s largest integrated trade, logistics, and industrial hub.

  • Total land area: Over 550 km²
  • Free Zone allocation: Approximately 100 km²

KEZAD provides infrastructure for manufacturing, logistics, and trade industries. In 2021, KEZAD Group Communities was established to provide employee accommodation solutions supporting industrial growth.

Logistics : The Logistics Cluster has expanded significantly through acquisitions and partnerships.

  • In 2020, AD Ports Group acquired MICCO Logistics to strengthen its supply chain capabilities.
  • In 2023, the Group acquired Noatum, a multinational transport and logistics provider. Noatum now operates the Logistics Cluster globally.
  • MICCO Logistics was subsequently integrated into Noatum Logistics’ Middle East operations.

The Group continues to enhance freight forwarding and transportation capacity, including the expansion of long-haul trucking fleets.Ports : The Ports Cluster owns and operates 10 terminals and ports in the UAE. It maintains partnerships with major global and regional players including:

  • ADNOC
  • COSCO Shipping Ports
  • CMA CGM Group
  • Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC)
  • Autoterminal Barcelona

The Group also expanded internationally through concessions and acquisitions, including Spain, Egypt, Pakistan, and other global markets.

Maritime & Shipping :Through SAFEEN, the Maritime Cluster provides a wide range of maritime services including:

  • Pilotage
  • Harbour tug services
  • Bunkering
  • Vessel Traffic Services (VTS)
  • Offshore and onshore logistics
  • Transshipment services

Specialized offshore services are provided by OFCO, while feeder services are managed by SAFEEN Feeders.Abu Dhabi Maritime regulates the emirate’s waters, ensuring maritime safety and compliance. The Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy delivers maritime education and professional training programs.

International Expansion : AD Ports Group has accelerated its global expansion strategy in recent years.

Pakistan

In 2023–2024, the Group signed long-term concession agreements with Pakistan to operate deep-sea terminals at the Port of Karachi:

  • 50-year concession for a container terminal
  • 25-year concession (extendable) for a bulk and general cargo terminal
  • Approximately 2,300 meters of quay length on the East Wharf

Operations are conducted through majority-owned subsidiaries:

  • Karachi Gateway Terminal (berths 6–10)
  • Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose (berths 11–17)

Egypt

  • Signed 15-year cruise terminal concessions at Safaga, Hurghada, and Sharm El Sheikh.
  • Entered a 50-year usufruct agreement with the Suez Canal Economic Zone to develop KEZAD East Port Said Zone.

Spain

  • Completed the acquisition of APM Terminals Castellón (100% ownership).

Georgia

  • Acquired a majority stake in Tbilisi Dry Port.
  • Inaugurated the Tbilisi Intermodal Hub, strengthening Central Asian connectivity.

Congo

  • Signed a shareholders’ agreement with CMA CGM Group to develop and operate the East Mole Terminal.

Governance

The Board of Directors includes senior leaders from key UAE institutions and industries, including representatives from ADG, ENEC, TAQA, EDGE Group, Emirates Global Aluminium, and AD Ports Group leadership.The Group’s Managing Director and CEO is Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, who joined the organization in 2008 and was appointed CEO in 2014.
